Event Planning and the Bearer of Bad News

As a requirement of my internship with Extension, I am to plan and organize an event. I am choosing to hold an Agriculture Day Camp for elementary-aged students. I hope to teach them about various aspects of agriculture and also have them participate in fun crafts and activities. Today I made my flyer for the Ag Day Camp I will be hosting on July 29. I shared the flyer on Facebook and had it sent in to be published int he Carroll News. It is much harder to plan and put together an event than I realized! There are so many details that need to be taken care of. However, I think my greatest challenge will be advertising, particularly since the event is in the summer when the students are out of school for vacation.

Later on in the afternoon today, Steve and I drove out to look at a man’s Leyland Cyprus trees that are dying. We get a lot of calls about this issue. Steve took him some information and also informed him that it is most likely due to the cold winter’s we have been having, leaving them more vulnerable to disease. It is frustrating in extension when you have to deliver bad news, or news that there isn’t really anything that can be done for their problem. This is an issue that we seem to run into quite often. I’ve learned to just be as helpful as you can and be able to offer alternative solutions or replacements for plants that cannot be saved.

For information on Leyland Cypress and the zones where it can be grown, you can visit https://pubs.ext.vt.edu/HORT/HORT-18/HORT-18_pdf.pdf to read more.
